External structure with fabric sleeve

Overview

  • Designed and fabricated a large-scale audio-visual and interactive sculpture.

  • From the outside the sculpture is a "wizard's hat" that the user stands underneath and looks up inside.

  • Inside the sculpture is a large kaleidoscope with programmable light show which provides an immesive experience for spectators underneath.

    Method

    • Modelled structure using SolidWorks and used FEA to determine weight constraints and stress points.

    • Communicated with the metal shop via CAD drawings following DFMA principles.

    • Assembled the structure using a MIG welder.

    • Soldered circuitry and programmed LED animations.

    • Used angle-grinders, glass cutter, powers tools and etching chemicals.

      Result

      • The sculpture has been displayed at several large festivals.
